Bike And Walk Week 1998
Bike And Walk Week '98 is a set of events sponsored
by Prescott Alternative Transportation (PAT) to promote and celebrate bicycling
and walking in beautiful Prescott. The purpose of these events is to raise
awareness about the environmental, community, and personal benefits of
leaving your car at home. Prescott is excellent for walking and bicycling
with superb trails in the surrounding forest and a small town feeling.
Stroll through historic downtown, commute by bicycle, explore the beutiful
forest. Take a leap this week and try a new way of getting around town.
Helmets are required for all biking events!
Bike and Walk Week Events
and Activities:
April 18-26, 1998
Saturday April 18th
- MARCH OF DIMES WALK-A-THON: Start off the week by participating in
a Prescott tradition and raise money for this great cause. Preregistration
is reccommended, you can pick up an info packet with pledge sheet from
the County Health Department. Starts at 8AM at the Courthouse square for
the 6 mile walk around town followed by l,unch back at the square.
- KICK OFF CELEBRATION: This event is sure to be one of the best times
of the whole week. Join PAT downtown from 9AM to 1PM for friendly competitions
of all kinds. Win prizes, have fun with your friends, learn more about
the upcoming weeks events!
- CHAIN GANG MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDE: This challenging 14 mile round trip
bike ride through the pines leaves at 9AM from the Petsmart at the corner
of Hwy 69 and Walker Rd.
Sunday April 19th
- BEGINNER LEVEL HIKE: With Edna and Sidney Mogelwer of the Prescott
Hiking Club. Meet at 9AM at the Liquor Barn parking lot for a short easy
hike!
- WOMENS DOWNHILL MOUNTAIN BIKE CLINIC: An introduction to the joys of
mountain biking in a non-competitive atmosphere. Learn technical skills,
meet other women riders, and have fun. Meet at the tom of School House
Gulch Road at 10:30
- CHAIN GANG TIME TRIAL RIDE: Ride hard and fast for 7 miles on Hwy 89
towards Chino to test your ability. Have fun watching your times improve
each month. Meet at 9AM at the Airport.
- MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDE AND ON TRAIL BIKE REPAIR CLINIC: Enjoy an intermediate
mountain bike ride and learn how to fix your bike when you encounter technical
difficulties on the trail. Meet Craig and Rob at the PAT office(710A Whitespar)
at 1PM.
- BEGINNER BIKE RIDE: Perfect for the person who hasn't been on their
bike lately. A great chance to get comfortable with riding again in the
safety of a group. This all ages ride will be in low traffic areas and
travel at a liesurly pace. Have lunch after the ride. Meet at 10AM at the
Yavapai College bike rack.
- DRINK SPECIALS AT COYOTE JOES: Kick back after your Sunday walk or
ride with $1.50 domestic drafts and well drinks from 3-6pm. Relax and savor
the warm spring weather on their beutiful outdoor patio.
Monday April 20
- BIKE / WALK TO COFFEE ROASTERS: Reward yourself for using an alternate
mode today with a free cup of coffee from the Prescott Coffee Roasters
located in the Albertsons center.
Tuesday April 21
- TREKABOUT WALKING CLUB HIKE: This challenging Thumb Butte hike will
take you over almost 2 miles of steeply graded trail. Meets at 8AM in the
parking lot of Thumb Butte Park for a great morning work out.
- INTERMEDIATE AND ADVANCED MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDES. Meet for both rides
at the gazebo on the square at 4PM.
- WALK / BIKE TO SATISFIED MIND: Swing by Prescott's premier bookstore
and get 50 cents off any coffee drink from the espresso bar. Browse through
the diverse selection of books and get 10% off all merchandise in appreciation
of using an alternate mode.
- BIKE COMMUTING WORKSHOP: Join us at the PAT ofice (710A White Spar)
at 3:30PM for a fun and informative clinic taught by a seasoned bicycle
commuter. Learn about equipment, Safety, Rules of the road and get a basic
introduction on how to commute by bicycle
Wednesday April 22nd
- TODAY IS EARTH DAY! Riding or walking is one of the best things you
can do for the earth! Become an active participant in sustainable living,
use an alternate mode to get around today!
- CELEBRATE EARTH DAY: From 10:30 to 5PM on the courthouse square. Activities
include an eco village (model of sustainable living), children's environmental
education activities, interactive learning stations about environmental
issues, and a revolving stage featuring artists and speakers.
- BROWN BAG LUNCH AT ACKER PARK: Walk, bike, or carpool to one of Prescott's
nicest open spaces at the end of S. Virginia. After lunch at 12 noon
and a presentation on the park's plans for the future, walk the short trail
and be the first to see the brand new displays of artwork created by Skyview
Elementary students.
- EVENING CELEBRATION AT THE PC ELKS THEATER: An inspirational performance
integrating storytelling, a slideshow, music, and expressive movement,
starting at 7:30PM
- NEW FRONTIERS: Alternate mode appreciation days. Walk or bike to the
store and deli and recieve a 10% discount today and tomorrow. Enjoy a healthy
lunch in the cafe, and don't forget your backpack for carying your groceries
home!
Thursday April 23rd
- TREKABOUT WALKING CLUB: An intermediate hike at granite basin starting
at 8AM, meet at Metate parking lot for a lovely hike to balancing rock.
- WATSON WOODS WALK WITH THE CITY OF PRESCOTT: Learn about the plans
for this beutiful area, including a rails to trails project from city planner
Ramona Mattix. Meet at 9AM at the sewer treatment plant, look for signs
on where to park.
- WALK OR RIDE TO BUTTE CREEK CAFE: And recieve a free cup of coffee.
Unwind and explore the Butte Creek Riparian Restoration project and the
Prescott College Community Garden. Located behind 220 Grove Ave. Open from
7-3:30PM
- ADVANCED AND INTERMEDIATE MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDES: Both rides will leave
the gazebo in the square downtown at 4PM
Friday April 24th
- BIKE OR WALK TO WORK OR SCHOOL DAY: Step up to this community wide
challenge to ditch the vehicle for one day! Or try carpooling for an energy
efficient change!
- KID'S BEGINNER BIKE RIDE: After work and school, head up to Pioneer
Park for a fun introductory childrens bike ride. Meet at 4PM and don't
forget to wear your helmet!
Saturday April 25th:
- 10K fAMILY MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDE: At Pioneer Park! Join the Prescott Police
Department Bicycle Officers, Parks and Recreation, Library Staff, Yavapai
County Health Department, and the Forest Service for a 6 mile mountain
bike ride, or a 2 mile fun ride. Starts at 9AM
- KIDS BIKE RODEO: Also at 9AM at Pioneer Park. Trained volunteers teach
basic bicycle handling and safety skills as you make your way through 12
exciting stations. Helmets are required, and all participants should know
how to ride a bike.
- BOULDERING CONTEST: In Groom Creek. Advanced and Intermediate climbers
can compete. Be sure to preregister at the YMCA by the 22nd. This event
promises to be exciting for spectators as well. So grab your climbing buddies
and carpool to the boulders in Groom Creek.
- CHAIN GANG BREAKFAST RIDE: A 15 mile ride starting at the airport at
9AM to Chino Valley with the intent to eat breakfast at the Ugly Green
Cafe. A great ride for beginners and out of shapers!
Sunday April 26th
- BIKE REPAIR CLINIC AND RIDE: Meet at Iron Springs High Gear at 1PM
for the repair clinic, then ride a great Thumb Butte loop trail
